Jane Doe goes to a party. She gets drunk. She blacks out. She is raped. Jane Doe reflects on the rape culture in our communities.

New Zealand actor Karin McCracken leads a public reading of a rape trial, where audience members read the roles of witnesses and lawyers, with pauses during the performance for the audience to text in live responses.  The hard-hitting trial juxtaposes frank and at times funny documentary footage of young people from across America, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

Jane Doe is a revelatory and carefully crafted discussion on consent, feminism and sexual empowerment.

Jane Doe, an original work written and directed by New Zealand playwright Eleanor Bishop, has toured through America, played to great acclaim at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, and now plays for a very limited season at Arts Festival Dunedin 2018.

In the climate of the #metoo movement the Festival is pleased to stage Eleanor Bishop’s powerful work.

The performance is followed by an opportunity to talk about this play.
