Ngā Puke is presented as part of the inaugural IHI Fest - an indigenous performing arts festival.

A cheeky, engrossing and heart-achingly touching story about a young Māori farmer and a budding artist who meet on the lush hillside of Ngā Puke in the Hawkes Bay just prior to the Second World War in 1939.

Once young and free, the second act of the play sees Waru and Angie reunite three years later in the cold, violent setting of war torn Crete.

Will the two ever make it back to the beautiful pastures of Pōrangahau?

John Broughton is one of Aotearoa's most important Māori playwrights. In tandem with long time theatre partner Jim Moriarty, Matua John was a central figure in bringing Māori theatre to audiences throughout Aotearoa whānui. Te Rākau Hua o te Wao Tapu, Moriarty's theatre troupe, travelled extensively to small town community halls and schools to share and gift the theatre world to thousands of New Zealanders through many fine plays that include Michael James Manaia, Frankie and Hone, Man.

Director Cian Elyse White made her debut as a director with this work in Auckland.
