Winner of Playwright of the Year at the Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards in 1992, Robert Lord's Joyful and Triumphant has earned its place as a modern NZ classic.
Robert Lord, who died in January 1992, was one of NZ's most successful contemporary playwrights. His stage hits included China Wars, Glorious Ruins and Bert and Maisy which went on to a successful TV adaptation.
Joyful and Triumphant was originally produced by Circa Theatre as a part of the then 1992 Wellington Arts Festival, subsequently transferred to the Opera House, toured successfully throughout NZ, and enjoyed success in Adelaide, Sydney and London.
The play spans forty years of Christmas Days in the lives of the small-town Bishop Family, as they struggle and cavil and cuddle. Beginning early morning Christmas Day 1949, it moves logically in time through subsequent Christmas Days of the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, to conclude late evening Christmas Day 1989.
Well-known director and theatre practitioner Lisa Warrington, will direct and this Reading as a part of NZ Theatre Month, and will feature some notable Dunedin actors.
